Week 14 Reviews: Dark Queen, Death's Rival, Skinwalker

From Goodreads:
Jane Yellowrock used to hunt vampires, but now she must fight--and win--beside them.

As Enforcer to the vampire Master of the City of New Orleans, Jane Yellowrock stakes her reputation and her life on keeping her territory safe. But Leo has been issued a blood challenge by the emperor of the European vampires, who seeks to usurp all of his power and possessions. If Leo loses the match to the death, the city will be forfeit, and the people of New Orleans will suffer the consequences. Jane can't let that happen.

Preparing for the duel requires all of Jane's focus, but with so much supernatural power in play, nothing goes according to plan. She has to rely on herself and the very few people she knows she can trust to stand and fight. Only two things are guaranteed: nothing is sacred, and no one is safe.

From Goodreads:
Jane Yellowrock is a shapeshifting skinwalker you don't want to cross—especially if you're one of the undead…

For a vampire killer like Jane, having Leo Pellisier as a boss took some getting used to. But now, someone is out to take his place as Master Vampire of the city of New Orleans, and is not afraid to go through Jane to do it. After an attack that's tantamount to a war declaration, Leo knows his rival is both powerful and vicious, but Leo's not about to run scared. After all, he has Jane. But then, a plague strikes, one that takes down vampires and makes their masters easy prey.

From Goodreads:
First ina brand new series from the author of the rogue mage novels

Jane Yellowrock is the last of her kind-a skinwalker of Cherokee descent who can turn into any creature she desires and hunts vampires for a living. But now she's been hired by Katherine Fontaneau, one of the oldest vampires in New Orleans and the madam of Katie's Ladies, to hunt a powerful rogue vampire who's killing other vamps...

My first review of Death's Rival, Skinwalker
My Review:
First off, I want to say that I know that I read this series out of order. I am crazy. I acknowledge that fact! It's just that I got approved to read Dark Queen, and then I wanted to read Death's Rival because that's the book the Younger brothers are introduced, and then I just plain wanted to go right back to the beginning, so I did. So there is some logic to the madness!

I'd forgotten a lot of what happened in Skinwalker, like the fact that Gregorie was set up to make it look like he was the bad guy. Or that Rick was an undercover cop. So yeah, that made it great to start it from the beginning again, before Jane knocked down some long-run scheming plans!

Death's Rival was so great for so many reasons, one of them you only appreciate after you read Dark Queen, because in Dark Queen you get to see Jane from a different character's perspective of what happened when Leo's house was burned down. So that was great!

So much happened in Dark Queen, which was just so freaking excited for! Like we met a new character in the very first chapter who has a really big impact! Like the creation of Clan Yellowrock, which is so fantastic! And then there was a consolidation in the bad guys, apparently! And finally, the big battle that's been building basically since the beginning! So much happens!

That ending was just so incredible! So much plotting, and it all came down to that one final battle! I love to love and love to hate bits and pieces of it! Because some things were really great, but others, not so much! That last scene, things are grim, but there's a glimmer of hope!

I just love this series, and I loved these 3 books, and I can't wait for the next 2 Jane books and the next 2 Soulwood books, Circle of the Moon is next, yeah!
