Week 52 Review: Girl Mans Up

From Goodreads:
All Pen wants is to be the kind of girl she's always been. So why does everyone have a problem with it? They think the way she looks and acts means she's trying to be a boy—that she should quit trying to be something she's not. If she dresses like a girl, and does what her folks want, it will show respect. If she takes orders and does what her friend Colby wants, it will show her loyalty. But respect and loyalty, Pen discovers, are empty words. Old-world parents, disintegrating friendships, and strong feelings for other girls drive Pen to see the truth--that in order to be who she truly wants to be, she'll have to man up.

My Review:
Oh, this book was a really great read! Pen was different-not only was she a kinda butch character, that people thought that she wanted to be a boy, but she was also Portuguese, and yeah, her family wasn't very accepting. It led to a lot of conflict!

I really enjoyed watching Pen's journey! She had her difficulties with her parents (her brother was awesome, though Pen kinda messed up a bit) and then there was her friend Colby. He was an ass, but he was her ass. Until he went too far. Not cool dude!

The whole thing about respect and her parents, that got drilled into her head. And it's like, age does not automatically mean you're a person to be respected. And a lot of her family were pretty awful to Pen, besides being pretty sexist. Glad that I don't have to deal with it!

The ending, it was pretty quiet, but it didn't need to be loud. She'd made her decisions, and started on her own path, and it was like, you go, girl! You do you! I was glad for the choices she made, the friends she kept, and that she'd moved in with her brother! That was great!

Yeah, this book was awesome, and I really enjoyed reading it!
